PMA receives Grant for go-cart project

Prairie Music & Arts was pleased to receive a $15,000 grant from the Sun Prairie Education Foundation to support the new GO-CART partnership with Sun Prairie Parks, Recreation & Forestry (SPPRF), taking arts-based programming directly to youth in Sun Prairie Parks this coming summer! This gift was made possible by generous donations from the Sun Prairie Education Foundation and its designated funds established by Larry Coulthart and the Lee Buske/Sun Prairie Exchange club.

The project is grounded in the belief that children should have equal access to enrichment activities that support emotional and physical wellness. Traditionally, summer is a time for school-age youth to kick back from the rigors of the school year, enjoying unstructured play and freedom. For many children, however, the unstructured nature of summer months and out-of-school time can negatively impact academic growth, emotional well-being, and physical health. The project seeks to fill the out-of-school time gap by offering quality arts and recreation opportunities that enrich and support the lives of youth in the SPASD.

Goals:

  • Promote access to year-round enrichment
  • Support the well-being of youth through artistic experiences and recreational play

Research demonstrates that artistic experiences strengthen a child’s academic growth, communication skills, and sense of self and that parks and recreation programs can play an important role in developing a child’s wellness. Through the joint initiative of PMA and SPPRF, the project will develop an ongoing asset for the SPASD and the City of Sun Prairie – taking unique, multidisciplinary arts and recreational experiences directly to youth in their neighborhoods.

Details:

  • The project will offer twenty summer arts and recreation activity dates and six school year dates.
  • Activities will be offered weekly at Wetmore Park and in rotation throughout city parks (two activity days per week); it will also enhance existing community events.
